  • Qualification for the ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup in 2024 is set to begin in August.
  • 11 teams have been confirmed for 2024, with five spots available through regional qualification.
  • Guernsey will host the first U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup regional qualifier from August 5 to 11, with Asia and Africa following in September. Division 2 teams are vying for eight Regional Qualifier spots – the second and final stage of regional qualification.
  • As qualification for the ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup begins in August, the future stars of men’s cricket will compete in the first pathway events.

The event, which has a rich history of introducing some of today’s biggest cricket icons to the world stage, will see the most promising talent from around the world compete to determine the competing nations in 2024.

Afghanistan, Australia, Bangladesh, England, India, Ireland, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka, West Indies, and Zimbabwe will compete in the 15th edition of the event because they finished in the top 11 in the 2022 edition. Regional qualification will determine the remaining five spots.

Guernsey will be the first stop on the 2024 qualification schedule. Because of the depth of strength in Europe, Africa, and Asia, a two-division qualification pathway will be used, with 24 teams competing for eight Regional Qualifier spots.

The Europe Division 2 Qualifier, which begins on August 5, will feature eight teams competing in 20 matches spread across the island’s four venues over a seven-day period. Young stars from Denmark, France, Germany, the Isle of Man, Italy, Norway, and Sweden will arrive in Guernsey alongside the hosts to kick off another exciting series of qualification events.

The two finalists and the winner of the third-place playoff will all go on to compete in the Europe Qualifier, which will take place in 2023 and will include Jersey, the Netherlands, and Scotland.

Mark Latter, Chief Executive Officer of Guernsey Cricket, commented on the start of the Europe Division 2 Qualifier, “Having had to put international cricket on hold for the past couple of years, to be back both playing and hosting is really exciting and we look forward to welcoming all the teams to Guernsey to enjoy the fantastic cricket facilities we have as well as the delights of our beautiful island.”

“It’s fantastic for the Guernsey players to be able to showcase their talents in front of their family and friends, and it gives everyone the chance to form cricketing friendships that will no doubt be rekindled in later years as they progress into their respective senior squads.”

Following the conclusion of the Europe qualifying event, the focus will shift to Africa and Asia. Both will host Division 2 Qualifiers beginning in September, followed by their final Regional Qualifiers in 2023.

Asia Division 2 Qualifier for the ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup

From September 29 to October 7, Oman will host the ICC Asia Division 2 Qualifier. Bahrain, Bhutan, Hong Kong, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, and Thailand will compete, with the top two teams advancing to the Asia Qualifier. They will join Kuwait, Malaysia, Nepal, and the United Arab Emirates in the final stage of qualification.

Africa Division 2 Qualifier for the ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup

The Africa Division 2 Qualifier will be held in Abuja, Nigeria, from September 30 to October 8, with Botswana, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Rwanda, and Sierra Leone competing as hosts. The two finalists, along with the third-placed team, will advance to the Africa Qualifier in 2023, where they will be joined by Namibia, Tanzania, and Uganda, who have entered the qualification pathway at this stage.

The qualifying events for the World Cup in the Americas and East Asia Pacific will take place in 2023, with each region hosting a single qualification event to determine their qualifying teams.

Head of Events at the ICC “The U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup has a great tradition of developing some of the finest players that have graced the game,” Chris Tetley said. It is a fantastic opportunity for tomorrow’s stars to shine on the world stage, giving fans their first glimpse of their next heroes and showcasing the sport’s bright future in developing cricket nations.

“The qualification process gives countries like Malawi, which is competing in the Men’s U19 pathway for the first time, a platform to compete in a global multi-team event.” Over the next few months, 24 teams from three regions will compete for their next step toward the World Cup.”

Structure of Qualifications

The ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup will feature 16 teams. As the best-placed Full Member nations from the previous event in 2022, 11 teams have automatically qualified for the event. Afghanistan, Australia, Bangladesh, England, India, Ireland, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka, the West Indies, and Zimbabwe are among them.

The remaining five spots will be filled via regional qualification pathways, with one team from each region securing a spot at the event.

In 2023, the Americas and EAP will each host one qualifying event, with the winner of each event earning a place in the U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup.

Each of the regions of Africa, Asia, and Europe will have a two-step qualification structure. In 2022, these regions will host Division 2 Qualifiers to determine which teams will compete in the Regional Qualifier, the second and final qualifying event. Only the regional qualifier winners will be eligible to compete in the U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup.
